The tactical rifle match will promote the use of the rifle in a defensive situation involving accuracy and speed both in firing and manipulating the rifle.
The matches would consist of several different rifle categories and utilizes both the General Purpose range and the 200 yard range. The match consists of lateral movement with the rifle, shooting at various known distances, which will require the competitor to shoot from the standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone positions. The distances to targets will range from 25 yards to 200 yards with IDPA and B27 silhouettes being the primary targets. The match may also require the shooter to use cover, shoot with and without a sling, and reload from the person or a table from a stationary position.
The different classes would consist of different action types and either optics or open sights:
- Rifle caliber center-fire semi auto (ie: 223, 308, 7.62 x 39, 7.62x54, 6.5, etc.)
- Rifle caliber center-fire bolt action (ie: 223, 308, 7.62 x 39, 7.62x54, 6.5, etc.)
- Rifle caliber center-fire lever action (ie: 30-30, 45-70. 35 Rem, etc.)
Pistol caliber center-fire semi auto (ie: 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, etc.)
Pistol caliber center-fire lever action (ie: 357 Mag, 44-40, 45 Colt, 44 Mag, etc.)
Shooting will be for bragging rights, and any prizes will be given by drawing name or number.
All rounds will be fired on the clock, all movement will require the rifle to be pointed vertically and down range, finger off the trigger, action open, (if possible) and the magazine/magazine well empty.
Combat course - General purpose range/ IDPA targets /20 rounds
Begin with rifle loaded with 5 rounds and held at port arms while facing the 25 yard berm. At the signal fire two shots to the body and one shot to the head on an IDPA target placed at 25 yards. All rounds fired are from the standing position. The shooter then transitions to an IDPA target placed at 75 yards and fires two rounds center mass.
The shooter then moves to the center of the covered shooting area where he will reload with 5 rounds using ammo/magazine from his person. Shooter while standing will engage the 25 yard target with two rounds center mass. The shooter will then kneel and transition to the 75 yard IDPA target and engage the target with 3 rounds center mass.
The shooter then moves to the position in front of the 100 yard berm (located on the far right side of the covered shooting area), reloading with 5 rounds of ammo using ammo/magazine staged on a table. The shooter while using cover/concealment, from the kneeling position, will fire five rounds at the IDPA target placed at 50 yards. Placing three rounds center mass and two rounds in the head for a total of 5 rounds. The cover may be used to support the rifle while firing. The shooter will then reload with 5 more rounds of ammo and from the kneeling position and using the cover for support place 5 rounds into center mass of an IDPA target placed at 100 yards for a total of 5 rounds.
Precision course - 200 yard bunker/B27 targets/15 rounds
Shooter will begin with rifle magazine loaded with 5 rounds, chamber empty. action closed. The rifle will be staged on a table muzzle pointed down range. At the signal the shooter will retrieve his rifle, assume a sitting position, chamber the first round and engage a B27 target at 150 yards. The shooter will have 90 seconds to fire all his rounds.
The shooter will then move to another position and with rifle loaded with five rounds will assume the prone position. At the signal the shooter will chamber his first round and fire 5 rounds at a B27 target placed at 200 yards. All rounds must be fired in 90 seconds.
As a bonus, the shooter may choose to reload (while on the clock) from the prone position with 5 more rounds and engage the steel gong. Doing so will remove 5 seconds from the shooters raw time on the first stage of the match. The shooter MUST hit the gong with ALL five rounds to be given the bonus.
Do not load until you are on the line. Magazines/stripper clips/enbloc clips will be loaded with 5 rounds.
No alibi rule, if you have a problem that is not a safety issue, overcomes the problem and continues the course.
Scoring will be a little different from IDPA. Rifles are a more precise instrument and each round outside of the center ring/head area will add 1 or 3 seconds (depending upon the area hit) to your total time. A miss is 5 seconds added to your total time.
You may have a sling on your rifle but you may not utilize it in this match.
No AP (armor piercing) ammo allowed. You will have the opportunity to engage a steel target. Damage to the target due to AP ammo will result in a DQ. And I'll ask for you to pay for the target.
There are 4 targets at each distance. You will be given a number and will engage that target. The targets will not be numbered and we count left to right. Pay attention and make sure you have the correct target before you start shooting. Shoot into a target already having been fired upon will result in that competitor being allowed the best five rounds for his score and will be counted as misses for your score.
October Tactical Rifle match Report and Results
I apologize for the late report. I was having some data base issues and actually thought I had lost all the scores. More electronically attuned minds saved the day for me.
On October 23, 2001 we held our 2nd tactical rifle match with 12 shooters competing. Among the new shooters were two lovely and deadly ladies who shot their first rifle match and did quite well.
The next match will be on February the 26th, 2012 and we will have a tactical rifle match the 4th Sunday of every month throughout the year.
The next match will be a little more extensive and you will need at least 80 rounds of ammunition and 4 magazines that will hold at least ten rounds each. You may also use a sling in the next match and it may be a good idea to have some type of magazine carriers for your person. We will be moving and shooting, and reloading with both forward and lateral movement required. Shots will be fired as close as 10 meters and as far as 200 meters. Do you know what your rifles POI is at 10 meters??? How about 200 meters???
